Welcome to The Obstetric Justice Project, formerly The Reproductive Justice Story Project.
This name change has been a long time coming, and although it won't change the work we're doing here, it may help to clarify the goals of this project; to expose mistreatment and abuse in reproductive healthcare across Canada and push for change!
Reproductive Justice is not just about changing the culture of reproductive healthcare, and by remaining so focused on those aspects of the work, we are diluting the important and powerful message of the Reproductive Justice framework. It’s time to move forward with a new name and stop contributing to this harm.
Obstetric Justice is more than simply the absence of Obstetric Violence. It cannot exist in Canada until every person has access to respectful reproductive healthcare that centres their needs and honours their human rights.
Obstetric Justice cannot exist until every person can access care from preconception, through pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period without fear of disrespect, discrimination, and abuse.
Obstetric Justice cannot exist until every person, regardless of pregnancy outcome, has access to shame-free, evidence-based information every step of the way, including access to abortion care, and accessible trauma-informed mental health supports.
Obstetric Justice cannot exist until healthcare providers and healthcare systems acknowledge the harm that has been done and begin work to change. It cannot exist until we have comprehensive policies and laws condemning Obstetric Violence in Canada.
This new chapter in this project is an exciting opportunity to explore what Obstetric Justice can mean, and what it means to readers like you!
Thank you for your continued support while these changes take effect. Your patience is appreciated as we make the transition over these next few months.
