Wrong Breastmilk to My Baby in the NICU - St. Joseph's Health Centre, Toronto, Ontario

My 33 weeks gestation baby was fed with another mother's unpasteurized milk in the NICU where a mother leaves a premature baby for care. The NICU does not have control of milk. This must happen to many mothers across Canada! Please share your story.

Having a premature baby is already a devastating experience. Having to deal with all the consequences of tainted milk is a nightmare for any parent.

July 2022 - When we walked into our bay at the NICU, we saw someone else’s name on the feeding bottle. We asked the nurse and she lied right away. After realizing that we caught her, she admitted the error and called the doctor. It took 3 days and us to force the doctor to start the routine check and emergency procedures. We were immediately moved to another hospital, where our baby recovered from this accident.

We discovered that the other mother was positive for CMV. When we asked for a copy of the charts, we received modified charts (unlawful without date and signature) and missing flowsheets (from the date of the accident). The doctors' behaviour was unacceptable and destroyed our mental health, it will probably take months to be sure our baby was not infected by another virus. We believe that since the hospital (NICU) did not have control of the milk, all the babies should be tested. This accident may have happened many times with many other mums. The struggle is real and we demand justice.

This accident and the doctors' behaviour badly impact the baby's health and the parent's mental health. Our complaints with public health and the hospital were open and the investigation is still ongoing.
